How Ohana One Advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected global objectives established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals were designed to address pressing global challenges—including poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and peace—with the aim of creating a more sustainable and equitable future by 2030. Ohana One’s mission to establish long-term sustainable surgical training programs through mentorship and advanced technology directly aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our work is focused on positively contributing to global health, education, and reducing inequalities, reinforcing our commitment to building a more equitable world.

How does Ohana One engage with the goals, and which goals are prioritized?

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Nearly 5 billion people lack access to quality surgical care. Ohana One addresses this gap by providing surgeons with remote training tools and mentorship, increasing global access to life-saving procedures. Through programs like the Surgical Sight Program, Ohana One utilizes smart glasses technology to connect surgical mentors with mentees worldwide, enhancing surgical skills and improving patient outcomes. By fostering this global community of knowledge-sharing, Ohana One empowers one surgeon to save thousands of lives.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
Ohana One’s initiatives promote inclusive and equitable education by leveraging digital technology to train doctors worldwide, creating a sustainable cycle of mentorship and skill-sharing. We have built a comprehensive surgical education ecosystem where participants communicate via peer-to-peer tools, augmented reality, and remote assistance software. These tools enable mentee surgeons to receive immediate guidance from experts across various disciplines, enhancing their skills and improving patient outcomes. By fostering global mentorship relationships, Ohana One helps bridge gaps in surgical education, ensuring that specialized knowledge is accessible regardless of geographical constraints.

  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental pillar in reducing inequalities, both within and among countries. Ohana One’s commitment to increasing the number of trained surgeons globally directly addresses disparities in healthcare availability. Through mentorship and advanced technology, we empower surgeons in emerging countries, equipping them with the skills needed to provide essential surgical care in their communities. This approach not only improves individual health outcomes but also strengthens local healthcare systems, contributing to broader social and economic equity.

  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Ohana One’s remote training services significantly reduce the need for international travel, cutting carbon emissions while maintaining high-quality medical education for professionals. Between 2021 and 2023, our use of remote technology saved over 1,128.6 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. This sustainable approach aligns with responsible consumption and production practices, demonstrating that innovative healthcare solutions can actively contribute to environmental preservation.

Ohana One’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals exemplifies the power of targeted action in creating a more equitable and sustainable world. By prioritizing health, education, equality, and sustainability, we not only address immediate medical needs but also drive long-term systemic change. The integration of cutting-edge technology and mentorship programs ensures that progress remains effective, scalable, and enduring, highlighting the critical importance of global collaboration in achieving these essential goals. With our community of changemakers, we can bring this world into an age of equality and justice.
